About Us

History of the Adelaide Wing Chun Academy

The Adelaide Wing Chun Academy opened its doors to teach Wing Chun Kung Fu to the people of Adelaide in 2013. The Academy was founded by Sifu Tony Psaila, Sifu Damian Rainer and Instructor Heath Gibbons. Sifu Tony and Sifu Damian have previously held a long term relationship/association with a large national wing chun organisation that closed its doors here in Adelaide.

The trio decided to open up their own Academy so both existing and new students in Adelaide could continue learning an effective system of self-defence and gain a deeper knowlegde of this amazing martial art.

The Academy follows the teachings passed on by Chu Shong Tin and Jim Fung, plus the continual evoloution from the head instructors' decades of knowledge gained from studying, exploring and teaching the Wing Chun system. Sifu's Tony Psaila and Damian Rainer are both recognised by the Ving Tsun Athletic Association Hong Kong as Sifu's of the Wing Chun System. They regularly travel to Hong Kong to train with Grandmaster Chu Shong Tin, and the greater Wing Chun family.

The Adelaide Wing Chun Academy is a member of the Australian Wing Chun Federation, a collection of Wing Chun clubs around Australia that stem from the same linage. The Academy maintains its ties to Grandmaster Jim Fung's original School.

Sifu Tony Psaila

Sifu Tony Psaila has had a love for martial arts since a very young age and was introduced by an old school friend during his primary school years.

Tony did judo for several years with the school's club and then became interested in kung fu and karate during his early teens (through the same school friend who had a background in Shotokan karate).

In 1981 at the age of 19 Tony discovered Sifu Jim Fung's school in the Adelaide CBD. Tony was fortunate enough to take private lessons under Sifu Jim Fung early on in his training and then continued his training under the guidance of Sifu Jim Fung's longest standing student Albert Chong whom Tony maintains a strong friendship with to this day. He was also fortunate enough to train under Graham Kuerschner, the academy's most highly ranked instructor (at the time) and various other senior Instructors.

In 1984 Tony was employed full time as an assistant manager for the Sifu Jim's School here in South Australia and taught full time. Tony taught in most of the available classes held during the day and evening for the school and ran its Highbury branch concurrently from 1984-1986 on two evenings building up a large and committed group of students. Tony also ran workshops and courses for many private and public school institutions and several TAFE colleges around the Adelaide CBD and metropolitan area. Tony received high praise and recommendation from the South Australian Education Department for the quality and professionalism provided to schools taking up wing chun as part of their physical education curriculum.

Tony's skill quickly became evident and his reputation as a teacher and practitioner quickly developed and he became highly sought after.

In 1990 Tony resigned from his position taking a hiatus from teaching and training to focus on his Christian faith and go back to study and complete his university degree. At the end of 1996 Tony returned back to the school and was warmly received back into the school and slotted immediately into the role of teaching. Tony's focus became internally centred and it became apparent to his seniors that he possessed a natural internal ability to relax and apply this relaxed state in combat.

Tony possesses the very rare ability to relax deeply (an important but extremely difficult component of the Wing Chun system as taught by Sifu Jim Fung and Sigung Chu Shong Tin). His ability was noticed by both Sifu Jim and Sigung Chu Shong Tin who both encouraged Tony to further develop this aspect of his training. Tony was graded to 4th Level personally by Sigung Chu Shong Tin and was enlisted into the School's circle of chief instructors.

Tony is able to demonstrate the explosiveness, directness and simplicity of the system whilst in relaxed state. He is known for the power he can generate in an explosive yet effortless manner and the speed with which he can apply these movements. Consequently, Tony is widely sought after around Australia and has given workshops and seminars in SA, NSW and QLD.  He has conducted seminars for his old school and currently runs quarterly workshops for schools associated with the Queensland Wing Chun Association and has been invited to run a series of workshops in the Northern Territory.  Tony has been invited to discuss his experience in Wing Chun (especially internal relaxation and its application) by interested parties in the following countries: Italy, England, Egypt, Czechoslovakia, Korea and the US and hopes to be able to undertake this in the very near future.

Sigung Chu Shong Tin whom Tony has visited in HK most years since his return, has encouraged Tony to go out and share his understanding of wing Chun with those who are interested. It is for this simple reason that Tony decided to continue teaching in his own school once operations in South Australia ceased.
